About the walk
This walk visits remote and abandoned farmsteads and is the very essence of these quiet and lonely hills. After leaving Lauder, the walk follows the Southern Upland Way to Braidshawrig, passing Thirlestane Castle which has 98 rooms and contains the Border Museum of Country Life. Part of the return route follows the Herring Road by which the monks and country people brought salted herring from Dunbar to the Abbeys and villages of the Borders.
