Melrose Waverley Tennis Club May 2010

Dear Member,
This is the first newsletter of the year. I apologise for the late arrival of this newsletter due to holidays and other commitments. As the season is well under way there is plenty of news to catch up on.
Scottish Cup – Men
On Sunday, 9 May, the Men’s team played Peebles in the Regional Qualifying Cup final of the Scottish Cup. The Men won 5-1 so, for the first time ever MWTC will play in the Scottish Club Inter-Challenge Cup Main Draw!!! The draw takes place soon so keep your diaries clear so that you can support your Men’s team in the National competition.

Official Opening of Melrose Waverley Tennis Clubhouse
As a club we can now appreciate the renovated and extended clubhouse. The clubhouse will be officially opened at 2.00 p.m. on Saturday 29 May by Councillor David Parker.
Our club coaches Elspeth Whitelaw and Ian Reilly are organising tennis for our young tennis club members while everyone is invited along to enjoy toasting the opening of the clubhouse - please come and celebrate the occasion! Adults can enjoy a glass or two and some savoury treats.
Clubhouse Rules
A reminder to everyone that "It's your clubhouse please leave it as you found it"! There have been a couple of incidents where a door in the clubhouse has been kicked and damaged and also where the premises have been left in a very muddy condition. So parents, if your children use a club house swipe card, please can you ensure that they are responsible about use of the premises. Also recently on a Friday night the door to the Gents changing area was left open all night with the light on. Can we please ask that you treat our clubhouse with respect and ensure if you are the last to leave that all lights are switched off and all doors locked securely.

Scottish Cup – Match Report

Peebles played with trademark fight throughout a match much tighter than the final score suggests. On the day, however, the Roses were Made of Stone (in offence and defence) and were greatly encouraged that the fixture was enjoyed by a large home support….one of those days. To attain this New Order, Melrose beat Earlston, St. Boswells (7-2) and arch-rivals Peebles with a cumulative set count of 42-6. Like a Flock of Seagulls, Melrose stuck together. All of the games were keenly contested and old friendships and rivalries renewed – “first to the net, thirst to the bar.”
Though all of the players took their passion and made it happen, special mention goes to the youngest and most experienced members of the team – Jonny Adamson and Mike Turner respectively. They played on all three dates with an 82% success rate! Melrose Tennis Musketeers who’ve contributed greatly to the Cup adventure so far (and Dare to dream further) are 25 April (v Earlston) Cedric Raffier & Ian Reilly; Glen W Gordon & Keith W Polson; Jonny Adamson & Mike Turner; 2 May (v St. Boswells) Andy Murray & Keith W Polson; Glen W Gordon & Iain Laidlaw; Jonny Adamson & Mike Turner and 9 May (v Peebles)Cedric M G Raffier & Jonny Adamson; Glen W Gordon & Ian Reilly; Keith W Polson & Mike Turner (the triumphant team is pictured above). (Thanks to KWP for the highlights of his press release).

Margaret Bunyan Trophy

The final was played on Saturday, 12 December, starting 12.30 p.m., thus managing to avoid the winter’s snow.

Team H (Brenda Lumley, Pippa Walls, Remco Sijmons and Mac Brown) beat Team C (Kirsty McKerrow, Margaret Bland, Keith Wylde and Leslie Young) by 3 rubbers to 1. The match was played in excellent conditions and proved a very enjoyable afternoon. Congratulations to Team H, captained by Brenda Lumley.

Please remember that subscriptions are now due, in fact they are overdue! Can I especially remind those members who are representing the Club in the Leagues etc. that they must be fully paid up members to be eligible to play.

More Junior News:

All the junior Leagues are now in full flow and this year we are running more teams than ever before – the season has started well with some really good matches being played. I am sure that those who come down on Fridays and Sundays to watch our up and coming youngsters are impressed with the level of the tennis they are watching.

Over the winter months there were box leagues for 12&Us and 14&s running and I would like to thank Jonathan Adamson for being in charge of these and doing such a great job – as a result there are several of our juniors who have started to see their ratings move in a positive way. These juniors are now wanting to take part in more competitions and tournaments which is again a positive move.

There are several Summer Challenge Events being run, for those who are 11&Under, all over the Borders – the list is up in the Clubhouse and there are entry forms available there – if anyone wants me to send them the schedule please just e-mail me at and I will send the info on. The first events are this weekend Sunday 23rd May – 8&Under at Hawick – 1pm start and 10&Under at St Boswells – 1pm start.
