MWTC Newsletter August 2009

Dear Member,
This is the third newsletter of the year and, even though it is towards the end of the summer season, there is still plenty going on and events coming up.

The Club Championships are drawing to their close with the Finals to be played on Saturday, 12 September. We are planning a barbecue over lunchtime so please make a date in your diary for that day. In the evening the annual Quiz Night will take place. There are further details below.

Due to popular demand, Mens and Ladies Doubles tournaments are being organised. Again there are more details below.

I have increased this newsletter to three pages to include all of the Junior News that Elspeth has been able to provide.

I have left the best news to last. The Club has been awarded funding from Scottish Borders Council to allow the completion of the final phase of the Clubhouse extension and refurbishment. This is now underway and I understand that the Committee are looking for volunteers to be the first members to use the showers!

Leslie Young, Newsletter Editor.

Junior News (and lots of it!)

Our Juniors have been having a busy year –we have had representatives at County and District events and many of our members have been travelling all over the place to play in tournaments. There are many tournaments and our players go – sometimes with success and sometimes just gaining valuable experience – I list below some of our players and their achievements this year:

Jonathan Adamson:
Selected for 17&U Kilgraston Squad and 18&U Borders District Squad, up to 5th in the South of Scotland 18&U rankings, won Mens Singles Handicap at North Berwick and was semi-finalist at 18&U event at NB, won Mens Doubles Handicap at Moffat (with D. Crawford), won 18&U Mixed Doubles at Junior Confined (with J. Bennett), won South of Scotland Matchplay in May, runner up in South of Scotland Matchplay and Winter County Grade 4 tournament in March.

Jessica Bennett:
Selected for 17&U Kilgraston Squad and team, also 18/16&U Borders District Squad 13th in South of Scotland 18&U rankings – played a lot of doubles this year, winning the 18&U mixed Doubles (with Jonny Adamson) at the Borders Junior Confined – not enough time for singles this year as too many other commitments – notably being asked to join the dancers at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Donald Crawford:
Selected for 17&U Kilgraston Squad and 18&U Borders District Squad, now 4th in the 18&U County rankings – Runner up in the Gents singles at the Borders Senior Confined and runner up at the Junior Confined in the 18&U – both times to Michael Fairburn! Gained a County Cap (18&U) at the end of last year.

Dougie Crawford:
Selected for 15&U Kilgraston Squad and 18/16&U Borders District Squad. Runner up in the 14&U boys singles at the Borders Junior Confined.

Michael Fairburn:
Selected for 17&U Kilgraston Squad and team. Also selected for 18/16&U Borders District Squad. Currently 3rd in 16&U and 2nd in 18&U County rankings. Won both the Gents singles and the 18&U boys singles at the Borders Senior Confined and Junior events (beating Donald Crawford both times). Gained a county cap (18&U) at the end of last year.

Blair and Struan Hutchison:
Runners Up in the Consolation 18&U Boys Doubles at Junior Confined. Struan won the 14&U Boys consolation at the same tournament.

Ailsa Jackson:
Selected for 15&U Kilgraston Squad and new 18/16&U Borders District Squad. Presently 7th in 16&U and 8th in 18&U County rankings. Won the Consolation event for 16&U girls at the Junior Confined.

Lindsay Maguire:
Has been invited to join the new Borders Squads that are starting up in the 12&U group.

Rufus McLean:
Won the 9&U & 10&U singles at the Borders Junior Confined. He also won an Orange tournament in Edinburgh at Christmas and has been selected for East of Scotland performance squad. He has been selected for the East as he at the Tennis Academy at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh.

There are several other players who have started to play tournaments this year – Fergus Godfrey-Faussett, Innes Yellowlees, Jack Johnson, James Patterson and I am sure there are many more that I do not know about but they all deserve our encouragement and support to go on attending tournaments and playing good tennis.
