Melrose in Bloom

The annual award presentation for Melrose in Bloom’s floral displays competition was held on Tuesday.

The awards, which were presented by Councillor Bill Smith, are given in recognition of the best floral displays seen in the town during the year.

Mrs Sheena Barron of Tweedmount Road took the first prize in the private gardens section, Burt’s hotel were winners in the hotels and inns category and Gibson Park Caravan Club site came out top in the other businesses section. The Chairman’s Award was presented to the Kings’ Arms Hotel in acknowledgment of the most improved business display. Certificates were also presented for 2nd and 3rd places in each category.

Melrose in Bloom Chairman John Miller speaking at the presentation commented: “ We see the awards as an important part of our efforts to enhance the overall appearance of the town. This year’s weather has presented real difficulties to all involved, but in spite of this, the two expert horticulturists, who undertook the judging, were most impressed with all of the entries and the general environment of the town.

John Miller continued: “ Melrose in Bloom can truly be described as a real community effort. Support for our work this year has been outstanding, ranging from individuals who quietly undertake tasks such as litter picking, through to businesses and residents who financially support our activities.”

Provost George Bunyan paid tribute to the work of Melrose in Bloom saying:
“ We have a dedicated band of volunteers whose efforts are there for all to see. The large amount of time devoted by the increasing number of residents to Melrose in Bloom is making a real difference to our environment. I wish the group every success in the future and await with interest the outcome of the Beautiful Scotland in Bloom judging on 15 September.”
