Newstead was built to accommodate the camp followers of the Roman legions, and since these early days has been inhabited without a break. When King David built the first Abbey of Melrose his stone masons stayed here and from them several families in Melrose trace their descent.
On the spot where these masons founded the Masonic Lodge of Melrose, claimed to be the oldest in the land, Office-Bearers of the Lodge greet the Melrosian and assure us that the industry and craftsmanship which built the Abbey still flourishes today.
